Combined Defence Services (CDS) Written Exam
The CDS Written Examination is conducted by the UPSC twice a year for graduates to fill vacancies in the following institutions of the Indian Armed Forces:
- Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun
- Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala
- Air Force Academy (AFA), Hyderabad
- Officers Training Academy (OTA), Chennai
For IMA, INA, and AFA, only male candidates can apply through the CDS exam. However, for OTA Chennai, both male and female candidates are eligible to apply.

How to Apply for the CDS Exam:
The notification for the CDS written exam is issued in December and May. UPSC holds the exam in April and September. Candidates can apply for the CDS written exam online only on the UPSC website. The Combined Defence Services written exam is conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
CDS Exam Pattern for IMA, INA, AFA, and OTA
The CDS written examination consists of three papers: English, General Knowledge, and Elementary Mathematics. The exam pattern for the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Indian Naval Academy (INA), and Air Force Academy (AFA) includes all three papers. However, the Officers' Training Academy (OTA) exam has only two papers: English and General Knowledge.
The CDS written exam consists of three papers:
- General Knowledge - 100 Marks
- English - 100 Marks
- Mathematics - 100 Marks
The CDS written exam for OTA consists of only two of the above-mentioned papers:
- General Knowledge - 100 Marks
- English - 100 Marks
OTA candidates are exempt from the Mathematics exam. The remaining two papers in the OTA written exam are each worth 100 marks, making the total for the OTA written exam 200 marks.
Syllabus for CDS Written Examination
The CDS written exam tests candidates in various fields such as English, History, Polity, Economics, Geography, Mathematics, Life Sciences, Physics, Chemistry, Current Affairs, and General Knowledge. For OTA, the syllabus is the same, except that OTA candidates do not have to sit for the Mathematics paper.

CDS Result Declaration
UPSC declares the result of the CDS written exam within a month after the exam. The results can be viewed on the official UPSC website. Candidates who perform well in the CDS written exam are sent call letters for SSB interviews. The final merit list is prepared after the SSB interviews and medical examination. Joining instructions are sent to candidates based on the merit list and available vacancies. The entire process takes approximately a year to complete and finalize the names of the selected candidates.
